Position Description

Bark Frameworks, an employee-owned custom framing shop in Long Island City that has been leading the industry since 1969, seeks a full-time Design Assistant to support the work of our Design department. The candidate should be a team player with an excellent work ethic; be knowledgeable about modern and contemporary art, design, and technology; and be interested in learning and growing with an employee-owned company. Please note: This position reports to our Long Island City showroom five days a week from 9 am – 6 pm. There is no work from home element to this position.

In support of the Design department, responsibilities include:

  • Measure, condition check, and photograph incoming artwork using a departmental logistics calendar shared with the Designers;
  • Safely wrap and store art to be framed using Bark art handling procedures;
  • Work collaboratively on a daily basis with Registrar to ensure accuracy of all object locations for incoming and outgoing artwork in the database;
  • Manage Design department’s Adobe, Articheck, and other software accounts by building relationships with company representatives; assist Designers with any technical issues related to these accounts;
  • Assist Registrar daily in answering phones and front door; fill in for Registration when Registrar is out (art deliveries/pickups; logging in artwork; data input; scheduling; reception)
  • Process website orders for framing hardware

Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years experience in art handling at a gallery, museum or similar environment required;
  • Proven ability to efficiently handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both with individual Designers and within the larger Design and Registration team;
  • Experience with art management software and an interest in new developments in technology;
  • Comfortable with answering phones/doors in a fast-paced business environment;
  • Competency in Adobe Photoshop and fluency in MS Office;
  • Background in fine art, art history, or design preferred;
  • Comfortable lifting and handling large and sometimes heavy artworks (50 lbs).

Compensation

  • $24 – $25/hr., based on experience and skill level
