Framing Rippl-Ronai

Here is a framing project that we were asked to undertake by Elizabeth Easton when she was Chair of the Department of European Painting and Sculpture at The Brooklyn Museum. The painting is by Jozsef Rippl-Ronai (Hungarian, 1861-1927), a member of the Nabi group, which included Vuillard and Bonnard, among others. They shared an interest in the decorative arts, and a number of them designed ceramics, tiles, screens and other decorative objects.

Frames carry multiple messages. Around a work of art a frame can establish an emphatic border—the artwork is inside the frame/the world is outside; or it may act as an almost invisible bridge from the artwork to the wall and the room. OUR FRAMING PRACTICES: The Condition Report

At Bark, the process of designing a frame starts with focusing on the work of art. We look at the artwork and consider how it might be best presented; we take careful note of its physical condition, and while doing so we fill out a condition report. We do this so we have a reference point, both for our staff who will install the work in its frame, and as documentation for the owner.

Framing dance is an interesting proposition. In the 1960’s The Judson Dance Theater generation of choreographers, and other performers as well, chose to break out--or walk out--of the confines of the “proscenium arch,” the frame of performance. Glazing Test

Recently a client asked if we would examine a frame made some years ago and determine if the glazing blocks ultra-violet light. Some of the media used in making the work were almost certainly light sensitive, so the collector wanted to replace the glazing if it did not block UV. To test the acrylic glazing we used an ELSEC UV meter, which measures UV values as the proportion of ultra-violet light to visible light.
