Bark Frameworks

Making a Frame

DeKooning Frame

January 2012

This work on paper had been framed conventionally with a silk mat to cover its wide borders.  We discussed designs with its owner that would emphasize the stature of the work, which certainly exceeds that of a sketch on paper. We decided to make a frame with a wide inner panel that takes the place of a window mat –this is known as a “passepartout” frame, from the French term for “window mat”.  The frame was originally designed by Degas and modified by Signac, who called it a “chemin de fer” (railway) frame, and in this instance it was modified by us.
