Art Materials

“…many of the artist’s raw materials—oils, resins, gums, glue, casein, eggs, etc.—are natural products. This means that they are highly variable mixtures and concoctions of a number of things and so cannot be expected to exhibit exactly standard or uniform behavior…” Ralph Mayer. The Artist’s Handbook of Materials and Techniques.

Some of the materials Mayer refers to are stable and durable. Others are fragile or fugitive. Knowing the properties of artist’s materials and how best to protect them is fundamental to our work.
